MASKWACIS VICTIM SERVICES UNIT
MISSION
The mission of Maskwacis Victim Services Unit is to aid and assist victims of crime and tragedy by providing a community support program in partnership with the RCMP and in recognizing the Plains Cree people's values of caring, sharing, respect, love, forgiveness, and compassion. The Maskwacis Victim Services Unit will provide quality services to the victims of crime and tragedy in the community as it pertains to the "Victims of Crime Act" principles.

Maskwacis Victim Services Unit provides support to victims of crime and includes a Board of Directors, 2 full-time staff, and volunteer Advocates.
Maskwacis Victim Services and its volunteer Advocates will respond immediately to referrals by Maskwacis RCMP and work to provide short-term emotional support and practical assistance to victims of crime or tragic circumstances.

Emotional Support
You are not alone…….. Many people who are victims of crime or tragedy; especially, in Sudden Death experience the same feelings that you may have. We support people bereaved by sudden death. There are many causes of sudden death; such as illness, a road crash, suicide, disaster, war, crime and other communicable diseases. Maskwacis Victim Services will help suddenly bereaved people access information, advice and guidance to ease their suffering and help them cope with their grief. Maskwacis Victim Services and its Advocates provide a listening ear, comfort and reassurance – and want you to know you are not alone. We may talk to you on the telephone, visit you in your home or at the hospital, or accompany you to court. Advocates are on call 24/7, 365 days a year. |
Court Support
and Orientation A person will often experience confusion, fear, anxiety, and may be overwhelmed through the court process, especially if they have never been a victim of crime. Maskwacis Victim Services will provide victims of crime with support and information about the court process which may lessen the trauma of being victimized. Through helping victims of crime understand the criminal court process and the role of the witness, it can decrease the fear and anxiety often associated with testifying in court. Referrals

Information
Our role is to reduce the effects of crime or tragedy on its victims. Maskwacis Victim Services serves to provide resources, and emotional support. When you want information about your case, Maskwacis Victim Services will liaise for you with the RCMP and courts while they are handling your police file.
